International cooperation is essential to curb cyber crimes as the scope of these crimes could be beyond the geographical boundaries of a nation, said Attorney General, Dr. Ali Al Buainain yesterday

Speaking to DT News on the sidelines of a training course on combating cyber crime, being held under the patronage of public prosecution in cooperation with Global Prosecutors’ E-Commerce Network, the Attorney General said that communication between all countries was necessary to fight this crime.

Dr. Ali Al Buainain said that prosecutors need a lot of knowledge and expertise in the field of cyber crime to understand the various dimensions of the act. “Upgrading themselves is the need of the hour since cyber crimes involve very complicated cases,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said that the law had seen a lot of reviews to make best use of the technology. “Now witnesses need not go the court to deliver their statements. Instead, they can give it through CCTV,” he said.

Police officers, judges and prosecutors of GCC countries will learn how to use evidences from the mobile phones and computers during the training course.

Need of trained personnels

Damir Delija, Technical Director of Digital Forensic Department in Croatia, said that finding trained people to work on cyber crime was the biggest challenge. “Providing just equipment and tools are not enough as it is every easy to destroy the evidences related to cyber crime. Therefore, you should know how to use the equipment to detect and prove cyber crimes. Only a trained person can do this job efficiently,” he said.

E-crime specialist, Esther George said that the scope of cyber crime was not just limited to hacking banks and industry or pornography, but classic crimes like kidnapping also come under the category as they are done with the help of computers, i-Pads etc.

Referring to a recent cyber crime where hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen from 100 banks in 30 countries in last February, Esther George said that cyber criminals could spew cash out of ATMs exactly when the gang’s henchman is waiting besides the machine.
